Description

Local musical theatre Star, Jonathan Roxmouth today released his third and latest album entitled FROM THE FOOTLIGHTS, featuring a collection of songs from major musicals such as CHICAGO, WEST SIDE STORY, THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW and SWEENEY TODD amongst others. Never before has an album of this kind been released in South Africa.

While Jonathan’s album STAGE BY STAGE is loaded with crowd pleasing favourites, FROM THE FOOTLIGHTS takes the listener on a journey through refreshing re-imaginings of some well known songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, as well as introducing the listener to a world of glorious lesser known songs by contemporary Broadway composers like Jason Robert Brown, Jeanine Tesori and Marc Shaiman. The marriage of vocal versatility across various genres and the inspired arrangement of the work of these profound composers has resulted in a musical and theatrical thrill ride from the first track to the last.

The musicians on the album (and of course the concert) are amongst the best in the country and feature legendary players like Rob Watson on drums and Denny Lalouette on bass. FROM THE FOOTLIGHTS was the first album to be produced in Johannesburg’s newest state-of-the art facility Howard Audio. The album was recorded and mixed by Adam Howard, a supreme trumpet player and one of the top composers of music for commercials in South Africa.

Bryan Schimmel (CHICAGO, WE WILL ROCK YOU, JERSEY BOYS) who arranged and co-produced Roxmouth’s newest album says, “In my thirty year career, I consider Jonathan Roxmouth to be the most supreme exponent of musical theatre in South Africa with an unsurpassed level of artistry, creativity and musicianship. While there have been South African artists who have released recordings of Broadway material in the past, none has ever embarked on a recording project on this scale.”

From the Footlights features songs from Shrek (Who I’d Be), Chicago (All That Jazz), Love Never Dies (‘Til I Hear You Sing), Rocky Horror Picture Show (I’m Going Home), Sweeney Todd  (A Barber’s Ballad), West Side Story (Maria) and Catch Me if You Can (Goodbye) and others.  “I am in love with musical theatre because it is live.  In this album I have tried to capture the performance in such a way that it feels like you are seeing and hearing a live stage performance,” says Roxmouth.  “No auto tuning, just great musicians delivering masterful renditions of wonderful material. With this in mind, I chose numbers that either haven’t been covered before or old favourites that have been refreshed and given a new musical angle.”
